Webring and Adblock Plus important info - 12/22/2010
I have discovered something I find disturbing that impacts all of us here and traffic to our sites and Webring. The most popular add-on for Firefox is something called Adblock Plus with 944,392 weekly downloads, after installing it I was shocked to see Webring navbars disappear, it now blocks them by default. AdBlock has been around for over 4 years now. It also works
with Google Chrome and some less used browsers. There are millions who will never see our navbars! Webring navbars are not advertising. Something should be done to counter this. I hope that Webring won't take this too lightly, over time this will have a negative effect on Webring and other parts of the whole
internet, but I suspect someone will develop a way to counter this before its too late. Browsing the web without ads is something that appeals to most everyone. Also the average person out there viewing our sites doesn't have the technical knowledge we do who are creating the web sites they are viewing. If
a million or more people a week install Adblock Plus or a similar thing, how many of those will click on the Adblock button and select preferences and scroll through the list and uncheck or anything else filtered out that is not advertising? Again I repeat when installing Adblock Plus now,
webring is blocked, you have to bring up the filter list and uncheck it, and its a very long list. And another million people install this just for Firefox every week and who knows how many more for Google Chrome and other browsers.
